Cosplay Bottom Ten: "Terrible Cosplay no Jutsu!" | August 2004

It seems the show to watch this year among congoing cosplayers is Naruto, Naruto, Naruto! I felt the need to watch this absurdly popular show in order to form an opinion on it, and, well, damn my soul, I can't help but like it. But that doesn't mean I can't make fun of some terrible Naruto costumes out there -- and this year, more than ever, there are a plethora of them -- so enjoy my mockery no jutsu in this month's Bottom Ten! While last month's Unsexy no Jutsu will always be the reigning queen of terrible Naruto cosplay, here are some runners-up:

#10

Some Gais
It's some guys dressed as Gai. Well, looks like Lee's in the middle, maybe, since there's no vest and those leg things. I dunno.

Black Gai is everyone's favorite. His costume is actually good and he's really entertaining in the photographs. The real point of focus here is the mutant on the right and his tacky velveteen costume. Did he go out and buy the first green bodysuit he could find? (Answer: Yes.)

#9 Clown no Jutsu!
Okay, it's not really that bad a Naruto costume ('snot that great either), save the Bozo wig. (That and the unfortunate choice of scenery. I don't get it.)

Forget about being a ninja, Naruto. Maybe you can entertain at Konohamaru's birthday party with your special balloon animal jutsu.

Also, if your costume is the same color as your hair, either you bought the wrong color wig or the wrong color jumpsuit.

#8 Konohamaru in 20 Years
Now we know what Konohamaru will look like when he's a struggling thirtysomething trying to find employment as... oh, I dunno, maybe a customer-service phone-rep, having long given up on becoming Hokage, his dreams crushed by the weight of the world and the reality of a cold, dark, bleak existence filled with fighting and death.

Grown man. Dressed as a five-year-old. Sure, the costume was easy, but was it worth it?

#7 Leopold Kakashi
Kakashi's hair is not very convincing. It resembles a seventeenth-century wig of high society made up of cotton balls, held in place with a store-bought headband. Black Gai is once again very entertaining in this photoshoot.
#6 Boxers Naruto

As Rin said: "When you're cosplaying the most popular character of the year, you need a gimmick to make sure you're attention-whoring more than anyone else." Good thing this gal came up with RAMEN BOXERS, or she wouldn't stand out in a crowd of Naruti.

#5 Half-assuke
Nothing like a mediocre Sasuke to liven up the mood. I can give credit where credit is due, and most of the lower part of the costume seems like a decent amount of effort was spent on it, as well as the replica shuriken from that one stupid episode. The headband might even be a homemade one instead of the store-bought kind (I doubt it). What really kills Sasuke here and makes him look like a half-assed reject is the shirt collar and the wig. Also, Sasuke has black hair, not purple. WTF, cosplayer: your pre-existing black hair wasn't good enough?

Sorry, Sasu. You'll have to try a little harder if you ever want to kill your brother.

#4 Man-Sakura

I'll bet he lost a bet.

...wha?! Fucking sign takes all the fun out of it.

#3 Anna Naruto Smith

Anna Nicole no Jutsu!

So he's crossplaying an invented hybrid of Sexy no Jutsu and Anna Nicole Smith? You have to admit, he's got balls. They are stuffed in his shirt.

#2 I Love Sasuke!

Sorry, fangirlSakura, but I don't think Sasuke loves you back. =^.^=

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: there's nothing more cute and lovable than a vengeance-driven arrogant little shit who'd sell his soul to Orochimaru and kill his best friend for the purpose of becoming cold-hearted enough to kill his brother.

AND OMG HE'D LOOK GREAT IN TEH YAOI!!!11!11!!!one!1!

#1! Unko Anko

The tenth MEGA-AMELIA AWARD WINNER is... this shitty ANBU (and possibly Anko, given the trenchcoat) costume!

All I can say is, it's good to know that even ANBU members like to shop at Hot Topic. And in a year or so we'll probably be seeing OFFICIAL LICENSED Naruto headbands there, too.

BONUSES! Ino-Shika-Chou & Gai/Lee
Because we found a few amusing pictures of GOOD costumes this month, too...

Above: Ino-Shika-Chou! Good costumes, good characters for them to play, very entertaining overall. So, I couldn't resist.

Below: The most spookily accurate costumes I have ever seen in my life.
